Building with Timber and Hand Tools (5 Days)

This course will teach the fundamentals of using hand tools to build a wide variety of trail structures with on site materials. Participants will learn how to use, maintain and repair a selection of wood working tools, on and off site. A hands on approach will be taken in the instruction of design and construction techniques. This is an ideal course for those who will be involved with trail construction in Wilderness areas. The course is designed for participants who are already knowledgeable in the basics of trail construction.


The course will cover the following topics:

  • Introduction to woodworking hand tools
  • Maintenance and sharpening of tools
  • Safe use of tools
  • Materials selection and harvesting
  • Site safety
  • Tree felling
  • Cross cutting
  • Peeling and shaping logs
  • Design and construction of timber check steps
  • Design and construction of timber retaining walls
  • Design and construction of timber turnpike
  • Design and construction of timber bridges
  • Repairing existing structures



Length: 5 days, with 8 hours of instruction per day

Participants: Maximum 8

Location: Client will provide area specific site/trail where work and instruction will be conducted.

Materials: Client will provide all necessary construction tools and building supplies

Pika Consulting will supply all instruction and educational materials and some specialty tools.

Price: $1,200 + Transportation fee (Dependant on location and scheduling)
